CAF Fines Algerian Football Federation and Players After Disciplinary Breaches

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed disciplinary sanctions on the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and several national team players following incidents linked to Algeria’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.

CAF confirmed that the federation has been fined a substantial amount for breaches of competition regulations, while individual players have also been handed suspensions for misconduct related to post-match behaviour. The sanctions follow a review of match officials’ reports, video footage and security assessments submitted after the controversial encounter.

According to CAF, the penalties relate to improper conduct by players and officials, as well as failures to maintain order after the final whistle. The governing body reiterated its commitment to upholding discipline, respect for match officials and the integrity of its competitions, stressing that such behaviour would not be tolerated at major tournaments.

The Algerian Football Federation acknowledged the ruling and indicated that it is studying the decision, with the option of lodging an appeal within CAF’s judicial framework. Officials expressed disappointment with the outcome while maintaining that they would follow the appropriate legal channels to challenge parts of the sanctions.

The suspensions handed to affected players are expected to be served during future CAF competitions, potentially impacting Algeria’s squad selection in upcoming qualifiers. While the financial fine represents a setback for the federation, the broader concern centres on reputational damage and the need to restore focus ahead of future international commitments.

The ruling adds Algeria to a growing list of teams disciplined by CAF in recent tournaments, as the confederation continues to tighten enforcement of conduct regulations. For the North African giants, attention now shifts to rebuilding on and off the pitch, as they aim to move past the controversy and refocus on their competitive ambitions.
