Rasheed vs Swedy Headlines Star-Studded Boxing Night in Lagos on April 18

The Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, is set to host one of the most anticipated nights in African boxing as the Universal Boxing Organization (UBO) Continental (Africa) Light Heavyweight Title takes center stage on Friday, April 18, 2025.

The event, organized by Balmoral Group Promotions, features a blend of elite professional bouts and celebrity showdowns, highlighting Lagos' growing reputation as a hub for sports and entertainment.

Local hero Idowu Rasheed will defend his UBO Continental (Africa) Light Heavyweight Title against Egypt’s Ahmed Swedy in the headline bout of the evening. Rasheed, one of Nigeria’s most promising boxing exports, is looking to extend his unbeaten streak and retain his continental crown in front of a home crowd.

Swedy, however, arrives in Lagos with a solid record and a fierce reputation, aiming to dethrone Rasheed and take the title back to Cairo. With both fighters in top form, the clash is expected to be a thrilling display of skill, grit, and power.

“This is more than a title defense — it’s a chance to show the world that Nigerian boxing is world-class,” Rasheed said during a pre-fight press briefing

Ghana’s Olympic bronze medalist Samuel Takyi will square off against Uganda’s Usero Henry Oteba in a highly anticipated lightweight contest. Takyi, dubbed “The Ring Warrior,” is looking to build on his impressive amateur pedigree with a statement win in Lagos.

The bout promises fast-paced action, with both fighters eager to climb the professional ranks in Africa’s competitive boxing scene.

In a unique twist, Nigerian music stars Portable and Speed Darlington will settle their online rivalry in the ring. Though light-hearted in nature, the bout has sparked widespread interest, with fans eager to see how the entertainers handle themselves under the spotlight of a live boxing crowd.

The Nigeria Boxing Federation has issued a stern warning to both celebrities, urging them to take the fight seriously and observe all safety protocols.

“While this is entertainment, it's still a regulated bout. We expect discipline and professionalism,” a federation spokesperson said.
