🇬🇦 Tragedy in China: Gabonese Star Aaron Boupendza Dies at 28 After Fatal Fall

The African football community is mourning the loss of Aaron Boupendza, a talented Gabonese international and former FC Cincinnati striker, who tragically passed away at the age of 28 after falling from the 11th floor of his apartment building in China.

Boupendza, who had recently signed with Chinese Super League side Zhejiang FC, was reported missing from training earlier this week. Concerns grew after club officials and teammates were unable to reach him. Tragically, the forward was later confirmed dead following a fatal fall from his residence.

Chinese authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and while no official cause of death has been announced, reports indicate that Boupendza had been involved in an argument with his brother shortly before the incident. His brother, who was reportedly present during the altercation, is currently being questioned as part of ongoing inquiries.

Boupendza rose to prominence during his time at Hatayspor in Turkey, where he finished as the Süper Lig top scorer in the 2020/21 season. His performances earned him a move to Al-Arabi in Qatar, followed by a stint in Major League Soccer (MLS) with FC Cincinnati, where he helped the club to a Supporters’ Shield win before moving to China in 2024.

Tributes have poured in from across the football world. The Gabonese Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) expressed its sorrow, calling Boupendza "a shining light of Gabonese football whose talent and passion inspired many."

FC Cincinnati also issued a heartfelt statement: "Aaron was not only an exceptional footballer but also a beloved teammate and friend. His energy, smile, and determination left a lasting mark on our club and our fans."

Boupendza represented Gabon’s national team, the Panthers, on several occasions, forming a part of a promising generation of talent. His death is a devastating blow not only to Gabon but to African football at large.

As investigations continue, fans and teammates around the world remember Aaron Boupendza not only for his goals and skills but for his spirit and the joy he brought to the beautiful game.

Rest in Peace, Aaron Boupendza (1997–2025)
Forever remembered. Forever missed.
