Algeria Break DR Congo’s Heart in AFCON Thriller as Iconic Fan’s Collapse Reflects a Nation’s Pain

Algeria progressed in the Africa Cup of Nations after edging the Democratic Republic of Congo 1–0 in extra time in a tense knockout match that ended in emotional scenes both on and off the pitch.

After 90 minutes without a goal, the contest appeared destined for penalties before substitute Adil Boulbina struck in the 119th minute, curling a decisive effort past the DR Congo goalkeeper to secure Algeria’s place in the next round.

The match was evenly balanced throughout. DR Congo defended resolutely and created several dangerous moments on the counterattack, while Algeria dominated possession and applied sustained pressure in the second half and throughout extra time.

Following the final whistle, attention briefly shifted to the stands where Michel Kuka Mboladinga, popularly known as “Lumumba” — one of DR Congo’s most recognisable supporters — collapsed after the defeat. The fan, famous for standing motionless during matches in tribute to Congolese independence hero Patrice Lumumba, was quickly attended to by medical staff and fellow supporters.

The incident underscored the emotional impact of the result on DR Congo supporters, whose team’s tournament run ended despite a disciplined and determined performance.

Algeria now advance to the quarter-finals as they continue their pursuit of continental success, while DR Congo exit the competition with pride after a strong showing in the knockout stage.
