CAF Disciplinary Review Targets Senegal After AFCON Final Disruption

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened a disciplinary investigation into the Senegal national team and head coach Pape Thiaw following dramatic scenes during the Africa Cup of Nations final that drew widespread attention across the continent.

The probe centres on Senegal’s reaction to a late refereeing decision in the final, when players briefly left the pitch in protest after a VAR review awarded a decisive call against them. The match was delayed for several minutes as officials attempted to restore order before play eventually resumed.

CAF confirmed it is reviewing match officials’ reports, video footage and post-match conduct as part of its disciplinary process. While the governing body has not yet outlined specific charges, possible sanctions range from fines to touchline bans for officials, depending on the findings of the investigation.

Coach Pape Thiaw has since expressed regret over how the situation unfolded, acknowledging that emotions ran high in a tense final while maintaining that his players felt aggrieved by the decision. Senegal’s football federation is also expected to submit its own account to CAF as part of the formal proceedings.

The incident has reignited debate over refereeing standards, VAR implementation and discipline at major African tournaments. CAF has repeatedly stressed its commitment to protecting the integrity of competitions and ensuring respect for match officials, particularly on the sport’s biggest stages.

For Senegal, the outcome of the investigation could have implications beyond the AFCON, especially if any sanctions affect the coaching staff during upcoming international fixtures. Until CAF concludes its review, the champions remain under scrutiny, with the case serving as another reminder of the fine line between passion and protest in elite football.
