Passion Pays Off as DRC Honours AFCON Superfan with New Car

Michel Kuka Mboladinga the Congolese supporter who became a viral symbol of passion and pride during AFCON 2025 has been rewarded with a brand-new car by the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of Sports in recognition of his unwavering support for the national team.

The presentation, which took place in Kinshasa, recognised Mboladinga’s visible dedication during the tournament, where images and clips of his energetic cheering and colourful presence resonated across social media and TV broadcasts. What began as a spontaneous display of fandom quickly turned into a unifying story for supporters of the Leopards and many football lovers across the continent.

For many, the gift is more than a generous reward  it is an acknowledgement of the role fans play in national sporting narratives. Supporters like Mboladinga often provide more than volume in the stands: their visible emotion, creativity and persistence help shape the atmosphere that players respond to on the pitch. By honouring him, the Ministry signalled appreciation for that grassroots contribution to the team’s identity.

Reaction on social media was warm and celebratory. Congolese fans praised the government’s gesture as a fitting tribute, while other African supporters hailed Mboladinga as an example of how sport can generate positive, cross-border stories. For Mboladinga himself, the moment was reportedly one of gratitude and humility  a personal reward that has become, symbolically, a reward for the country’s supporters as well.

The episode also raises a broader conversation about how federations and governments recognise non-playing contributors to national success. In recent editions of AFCON, similar acts of recognition have underscored the social value of football beyond results: community pride, cultural expression and the soft power of sport.

As the Leopards and other nations reflect on AFCON 2025, Michel Kuka Mboladinga’s new car will serve as a reminder that the tournament’s most memorable moments are not always produced by the scoreboard
sometimes they come from the stands, where passion meets purpose.
