President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has described the launch of the FIFA-backed U15 Girls Regional Colts Leagues as a landmark moment in the long-term development of women’s football in the country.
Speaking at the official launch ceremony in Accra on Friday, January 23, 2026, Simeon-Okraku said the new competition represents a major step in building a sustainable pathway for young female footballers from the grassroots to the elite level.
According to the GFA President, the initiative is part of a deliberate strategy to strengthen women’s football nationwide through structured development rather than short-term interventions. He noted that the league provides, for the first time, a coordinated national platform for girls under the age of 15 across all ten football regions.
Simeon-Okraku expressed appreciation to FIFA for its continued support through the Women’s Football Development Programme, describing the league as evidence of what can be achieved through strategic partnerships and targeted investment.
Since taking office in 2019, the GFA President said his administration has prioritised women’s football by investing in grassroots programmes, improving league structures, and supporting capacity building for coaches and administrators. He explained that the U15 Girls Regional Colts Leagues are a natural extension of those efforts.
Beyond football development, Simeon-Okraku highlighted the social value of the league, stressing that it will help shape character, discipline and confidence among young girls while offering them a clear pathway into higher levels of the game.
He also linked the initiative to recent improvements in Ghana’s women’s football, including the resurgence of the Black Queens on the continental stage. However, he cautioned that sustained success at senior level depends heavily on a strong grassroots foundation.
The GFA President said the new league will serve as the breeding ground for future national team players, including the Black Maidens, Black Princesses and Black Queens, while ensuring early talent identification and consistent player development.
In his message to participating players, Simeon-Okraku urged commitment and discipline, assuring them of the Association’s support throughout their development journey.
The U15 Girls Regional Colts Leagues are expected to play a key role in strengthening Ghana’s women’s football ecosystem by creating a reliable talent pipeline and promoting values of teamwork, excellence and inclusivity.
