AFCON 2027 Will Go Ahead — Motsepe Dismisses Postponement Claims

Patrice Motsepe has firmly dismissed speculation that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations could be postponed, insisting preparations remain on track for the East African co-hosted tournament.

The Confederation of African Football president said there are no plans to delay or relocate the competition from its designated hosts — Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania — despite growing reports questioning infrastructure readiness and logistical timelines.

Motsepe stressed that CAF maintains confidence in the joint bid and is working closely with authorities in all three countries to ensure stadium upgrades, transport systems, and accommodation facilities meet tournament standards. He added that CAF’s inspection teams will continue routine monitoring visits to track progress and provide technical guidance where needed.

Concerns about possible postponement surfaced in recent weeks amid online speculation and commentary suggesting that construction delays could affect delivery schedules. However, CAF leadership insists such claims are premature and not based on official assessments.

The continental governing body also clarified that discussions about potential future format changes or calendar adjustments for African football competitions do not impact the 2027 finals, which remain scheduled for mid-year to reduce clashes with major European leagues.

With qualifiers expected to intensify over the coming months, Motsepe’s statement is aimed at reassuring participating nations, commercial partners, and supporters that planning remains firmly on course for Africa’s flagship football event.
