Head coach Eric Chelle has formally requested a significant salary increase as part of a new contract proposal submitted to the Nigeria Football Federation, sparking fresh debate over coaching pay and investment in the national team setup.
Sources within Nigerian football circles say the current boss of Nigeria national football team is asking for a monthly wage of $130,000, more than double his existing earnings. The proposal reportedly forms part of a broader package that includes improved working conditions, enhanced logistical support, and expanded authority over technical decisions.
Officials have confirmed receipt of the request but stressed that discussions are ongoing and no final decision has been reached. A senior federation figure said the body will review the financial implications before responding formally, noting that any revised contract must align with budget realities and government-approved funding structures.
Chelle’s push for improved terms comes after he guided Nigeria to a strong continental showing at AFCON 2025, a performance that strengthened his bargaining position and increased public support for his continued tenure.
Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission is believed to be monitoring the situation closely, as any adjustment to the coach’s salary package could require broader administrative approval.
Negotiations are expected to continue in the coming weeks, with stakeholders keen to resolve the matter swiftly to avoid distractions ahead of crucial international fixtures.
