SA Not Yet Confirmed for 2026 WAFCON, Minister Sets the Record Straight

South Africa will not automatically host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie confirmed on Monday, ending weeks of speculation sparked by earlier comments from a deputy minister.

Speaking to the media, McKenzie stressed that Morocco remains the official host for the continental tournament, which is set to showcase Africa’s top female football talent next year. He added that while South Africa is willing to assist if CAF requests support, no formal agreement has been made to relocate the competition.

The clarification comes after Deputy Minister Peace Mabe suggested South Africa could step in, leading to confusion across sports media and social platforms. McKenzie’s statement aims to set the record straight and emphasise the government’s adherence to proper CAF processes before any hosting changes can be confirmed.

CAF has yet to comment on South Africa’s potential involvement, and organisers in Morocco continue preparations. Analysts note that a last-minute relocation of a major continental tournament would involve significant logistical hurdles — including stadium readiness, travel plans, and broadcast commitments — making immediate relocation unlikely without clear CAF directives.

For South African fans, McKenzie’s comments provide clarity and reassurance that the country is not being rushed into a decision. It also reinforces the importance of coordinated communication between sports officials to avoid mixed signals in high-profile tournaments.

With WAFCON rapidly approaching, the focus now returns to the teams, players, and preparations in Morocco, while South Africa remains a potential future host rather than a confirmed replacement.
