CAF U-17 AFCON: Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Tunisia Seal Quarter-Final Spots as World Cup Race Heats Up

The TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco delivered another thrilling round of group-stage action on April 7, with decisive fixtures confirming more teams for the quarter-finals and shaping the continent’s representation at the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.

Group D: Côte d’Ivoire Top, Mali Through, Angola Miss Out

Côte d'Ivoire produced a standout performance in their final Group D clash, overcoming Mali 4-2 to finish top of the group with seven points. The Ivorians, dominant throughout the match, capitalized on defensive lapses to register a convincing win, ending the group stage with an impressive +7 goal difference.

Despite the loss, Mali also progressed to the quarter-finals, finishing second with six points and a +1 goal difference. Angola, who thrashed the Central African Republic 6-1 in the group’s other match, fell just short. Their four-point haul and positive goal difference weren’t enough to secure one of the best third-place spots, sending them out of the tournament. The Central African Republic, meanwhile, exited without registering a single point.

Group C: Senegal and Tunisia Advance

Senegal confirmed their place in the knockout stages with a composed 2-0 victory over Somalia. The West Africans, consistent across their group matches, demonstrated tactical discipline and attacking flair, booking their ticket to the quarter-finals with ease.

Tunisia joined them after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Gambia. The North Africans showed resilience to edge out their opponents in a tightly contested affair, doing enough to progress from a competitive group.

World Cup Qualification Picture

As the U-17 AFCON edges closer to its climax, the stakes continue to rise—not just for continental supremacy, but for global ambitions as well. With the top four teams earning automatic qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar later this year, the race for the semi-finals has intensified.

Already, Morocco, Zambia, and South Africa have sealed their places on the global stage. Following Monday’s results, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Mali, and Tunisia remain in contention to join them, with the quarter-final line-up now nearly complete.

Looking Ahead

The knockout rounds promise high-stakes clashes as Africa’s finest young talents battle for the U-17 crown and a chance to represent the continent on the world stage. With standout performances, dramatic finishes, and passionate football, the TotalEnergies U-17 AFCON continues to showcase the future of African football.
