LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos is poised for four days of thrilling athletics action as MTN CHAMPS Season 3 rolls into town from April 9 to 12, 2025, bringing together a record-breaking number of young athletes for the Continental Relays at two iconic venues — Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Sports Complex.
With over 2,500 registered participants representing 155 secondary schools from across Nigeria, and international entries from Benin Republic, Togo, and Côte d’Ivoire, this year’s Lagos edition is set to be the most competitive and vibrant yet. The athletes are grouped into four developmental categories: Cadets (443), Youths (824), Juniors (610), and Seniors (628), showcasing a near-even gender balance with 907 female and 1,598 male competitors.
The week’s festivities will kick off with a Flag Run on April 8, where young sprinters will carry the MTN CHAMPS banner through the streets of Lagos, symbolizing unity, passion, and the city’s deep connection with sports.
Organized as part of a broader mission to identify and groom Nigeria’s next generation of track and field stars, MTN CHAMPS has quickly become a launchpad for future Olympians and world champions. The Continental Relays in Lagos promise a packed schedule of elite-level performances, electrifying sprints, and passionate competition, all in front of local fans eager to witness athletic greatness unfold.
Speaking ahead of the event, organisers highlighted the importance of the platform in “inspiring the next generation of global medalists for Nigeria.” From grassroots to elite youth categories, the tournament is strategically designed to spotlight rising talents while fostering a competitive spirit.
Following the Lagos leg, attention will shift to the Grand Finale in Uyo, slated for April 30 to May 3 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, where the best of the best will battle for national honors.
As excitement builds, fans, scouts, and athletics enthusiasts are encouraged to throng the YABATECH and UNILAG sports complexes to support the athletes and enjoy the energy and entertainment that has become synonymous with MTN CHAMP
