The Basketball Africa League (BAL) has named former WNBA All-Star and ESPN analyst Chiney Ogwumike as its first-ever female ambassador, marking a significant milestone in the league’s ongoing commitment to gender inclusion and youth development across the continent.
Ogwumike, a Nigerian-American basketball icon, will spearhead a series of events and grassroots clinics during the 2025 BAL season. Her role will focus on inspiring and empowering young girls and women through sports, with an emphasis on leadership, health, and education initiatives tied to basketball.
“I’m incredibly honored to take on this role with the BAL,” Ogwumike said in a statement. “This is about more than just basketball—it's about showing young African girls that they belong on the court, in boardrooms, and in every space where decisions are made. I'm excited to contribute to the growing legacy of African basketball and help create opportunities for the next generation.”
The appointment of Ogwumike—a former No. 1 WNBA draft pick and current media personality—comes at a pivotal time for the league. Now in its fifth season, the BAL has expanded its reach across Africa, with the 2025 campaign featuring conferences in Morocco, Senegal, Rwanda, and South Africa.
As ambassador, Ogwumike will participate in BAL's youth development platforms such as BAL Elevate and Jr. NBA programs. Her presence is expected to enhance the visibility of female participation in basketball across Africa, an area that remains underserved despite growing interest and talent.
BAL President Amadou Gallo Fall described Ogwumike’s appointment as a “historic moment” for the league. “Chiney is a trailblazer whose impact extends beyond the hardwood. Her leadership and advocacy for women and youth make her the ideal ambassador as we continue to build a basketball ecosystem that is inclusive, dynamic, and impactful.”
Born to Nigerian parents, Ogwumike has long championed African sports and social causes, often using her platform to advocate for equity in sports and education. Her new role with BAL represents a return to her roots and a new chapter in her journey as a global sports leader.
The 2025 BAL season continues this month with games in Rabat, Morocco, before moving to Dakar, Kigali, and finally Pretoria for the playoffs in June.
