Nigeria international Tolu Arokodare has opened up after being subjected to racist abuse on social media in the aftermath of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ recent Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.
The forward, who missed a first-half penalty in the match that Wolves lost 1–0, took to his personal social platforms to address the barrage of discriminatory comments aimed at him following the game. “It’s still unbelievable,” Arokodare wrote, expressing the shock and disappointment he felt at the abuse.
Wolves swiftly condemned the attacks, describing them as “abhorrent and unlawful,” and shared screenshots of the offending posts as part of their public stance against discrimination. The club confirmed it would work with law enforcement agencies and social media platforms to identify and hold accountable those responsible for propagating racist content.
The incident highlights a growing concern across English football, where players have increasingly reported racial abuse online in close proximity to matchdays. Anti-discrimination campaign groups have reiterated calls for stronger safeguards, urging both the Premier League and social media companies to implement more effective measures to detect, remove and litigate against racist material.
Support poured in for Arokodare from teammates, fans and fellow professionals, with many condemning the abuse and praising the striker’s courage in speaking out. Wolves reaffirmed their commitment to creating an inclusive environment for all players and reiterated that discriminatory conduct would not be tolerated by the club or its supporters.
As investigations proceed, attention now turns to how authorities and tech firms will respond to the latest episode — a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against racism in sport.
