FC Porto moved a step closer to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League after a hard-fought 2–1 victory over VfB Stuttgart on Thursday night.
Nigerian forward Terem Moffi opened the scoring for the Portuguese side with a clinical finish in the first half, giving the visitors an early advantage. Porto capitalized on their momentum soon after when young midfielder Rodrigo Mora doubled the lead following an impressive attacking move.
Another Nigerian, Zaidu Sanusi, played a key role in the second goal. The left-back surged forward and delivered a dangerous cross that allowed Mora to slot the ball past Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nübel.
Stuttgart responded before the break as striker Deniz Undav pulled one back for the German side, finishing calmly to keep the hosts in the contest.
Despite increased pressure from Stuttgart in the second half, Porto remained disciplined defensively and managed to protect their narrow lead until the final whistle.
The result gives Porto a valuable advantage heading into the second leg in Portugal, where they will hope to seal qualification for the Europa League quarter-finals.
For African football fans, the night belonged to Moffi and Sanusi, whose strong performances highlighted the growing influence of Nigerian players on the European stage.
