Chinese Grand Prix action began with strong pace from George Russell, who topped the practice session ahead of Sprint Qualifying at the Shanghai International Circuit on Friday.
Driving for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, Russell delivered the fastest lap of the session, signaling that the Silver Arrows could be strong contenders for pole in the sprint shootout.
The session provided teams with their only opportunity to fine-tune setups before Sprint Qualifying, with several drivers pushing hard on the resurfaced Shanghai track. Ferrari experimented with a new aerodynamic concept as both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton evaluated the updated rear-wing package during practice.
McLaren also showed promising speed, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both featuring among the quicker runners as teams prepared for the short and intense Sprint Qualifying format.
Sprint Qualifying will determine the starting grid for Saturday’s Sprint race, which offers valuable championship points and sets the stage for Sunday’s main Grand Prix.
With teams facing limited preparation time, drivers must deliver near-perfect laps to secure strong starting positions on the long straights and technical corners of the Shanghai circuit.
The Chinese Grand Prix marks another key round in the 2026 Formula One season, with teams looking to build momentum early in the championship battle.
