Remo Stars Make History with First-Ever NPFL Title Triumph

Remo Stars have etched their name in Nigerian football history, claiming their maiden Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title with a dramatic 1–0 win over Niger Tornadoes on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

The title-clinching goal came in the 84th minute through Olamilekan Adedayo, whose strike sent the home crowd into euphoric celebration. With the victory, the Sky Blue Stars sealed an unassailable lead in the NPFL standings, crowning a season of remarkable consistency and tactical brilliance.

This landmark victory is especially significant as it makes Remo Stars the first club from Nigeria’s southwest region to lift the NPFL title since Julius Berger FC’s triumph in 2000. Furthermore, they are the first privately-owned team to win the league since Ocean Boys of Bayelsa in 2006 — a moment that signals a shift in the power dynamics of Nigerian club football.

Under the astute leadership of head coach Daniel Ogunmodede, Remo Stars have built a formidable squad that blends youth with experience. The team's disciplined approach, effective game management, and resilience under pressure have defined their 2024/25 campaign.

Their historic run has not only inspired fans in Ikenne and beyond but also underscored the rising competitiveness and professional standards in the NPFL.

As the curtains fall on the season, Remo Stars’ triumph serves as a shining example of what can be achieved with vision, structure, and belief. The sky, indeed, appears to be just the beginning for the Sky Blue Stars.

Road to Guangzhou: African Nations Gear Up for 2025 World Relays

The countdown to the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, has begun. Scheduled for May 10–11, the event will serve as a pivotal qualifier for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this year. For African nations, this presents a golden opportunity—not just to qualify, but to reaffirm their place among the world’s elite in the sprinting and relay scene.

๐Ÿ Nigeria: Building a Powerhouse

Nigeria is heading to Guangzhou with one of its most talented relay squads in recent years. The team will compete in four of the six relay events: men’s and women’s 4x100m, mixed 4x100m, and mixed 4x400m.

The men’s 4x100m squad features elite sprinters such as Alaba Akintola, Udodi Onwuzurike, Favour Ashe, and Usheoritse Itsekiri, blending youth and experience with raw speed. The women’s lineup is equally star-studded, headlined by Olympic hurdler Tobi Amusan, alongside Rosemary Chukwuma, Tima Godbless, and Favour Ofili.

For the mixed relays, the roster includes 400m specialists Chidi Okezie, Imaobong Nse Uko, and Patience Okon-George, positioning Nigeria as a strong medal contender in both the 4x100m and 4x400m formats.

“Our athletes are peaking at the right time. We’re not just going to participate; we’re going to compete,” a source within the Athletics Federation of Nigeria said.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Uganda: A Debut to Remember

In a major milestone, Uganda has qualified its 4x400m relay team for the first time in World Relays history. This reflects a strategic shift in Uganda’s athletics program, which has traditionally been known for distance running. The country's inclusion adds a new chapter to its athletic evolution and highlights the continent’s growing relay depth.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ผ Botswana: Eyes on Gold Again

Botswana, one of Africa’s sprinting giants, is preparing to defend its gold medal at the World Relays. Spearheading the team is Olympic 200m silver medalist Letsile Tebogo, whose explosive speed and consistency make Botswana a serious threat in both the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m events.

Botswana’s relay system has become a model of efficiency in Africa, built on youth development and strong team chemistry.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช Kenya: Beyond Distance Running

Kenya, often synonymous with long-distance excellence, is doubling down on its sprint relay ambitions. The Kenyan Athletics Federation recently conducted specialized relay trials at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium, aiming to craft competitive teams across the 4x100m and 4x400m categories.

By investing in sprint-focused training camps and athlete development, Kenya is aiming not just to qualify—but to contend.

๐ŸŽฏ The Stakes: Qualification for Tokyo

The 2025 World Relays is more than a showcase—it’s a gateway. The top 14 teams in each of the five Olympic relay events (men’s and women’s 4x100m, 4x400m, and mixed 4x400m) will earn automatic qualification for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Two additional teams per event will qualify via global performance rankings within the qualification window, which closes on August 24, 2025.

๐ŸŒ Africa Rising

From Lagos to Gaborone, from Kampala to Nairobi, Africa is sprinting toward a new era. With elite athletes, stronger infrastructure, and more strategic planning, the continent is not only participating but contending at the highest level.

As Guangzhou 2025 approaches, expect fireworks—and expect Africa to shine.

Hellen Obiri Eyes Historic Third Consecutive Boston Marathon Victory

Kenyan long-distance sensation Hellen Obiri is set to chase history at the 2025 Boston Marathon as she bids for her third consecutive victory in the women’s division.

Obiri, a two-time Olympic silver medalist and reigning marathon champion, will line up in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, on Monday, April 21, with her eyes firmly set on extending her dominance on the world marathon stage. A win this year would make her only the second woman in history to win three straight Boston titles, solidifying her place among long-distance running legends.

South Africa Rules Out Bids for 2035 and 2039 Rugby World Cups Amid Economic Concerns

South Africa, one of the most successful rugby nations in history, has announced it will not submit bids to host the 2035 or 2039 Rugby World Cups, citing economic and logistical challenges.

The decision comes despite the Springboks’ continued dominance on the global stage, including their record fourth Rugby World Cup title won in 2023. However, according to the South African Rugby Union (SARU), the financial demands of hosting a global tournament are not feasible under the country's current economic conditions.

“While we remain committed to growing the game and maintaining South Africa’s status as a rugby powerhouse, we must make responsible decisions based on our national realities,” a SARU spokesperson said in a statement. “At this time, hosting a Rugby World Cup is not economically viable.”

The move places South Africa among a growing list of traditional rugby nations opting out of the bidding process. Countries like New Zealand and Ireland have also voiced concerns about the rising costs and infrastructure requirements associated with staging the event. In light of these developments, World Rugby is increasingly considering emerging markets such as the United States, Argentina, and nations in the Middle East for future tournaments.

Hosting a Rugby World Cup can bring significant tourism and economic benefits, but the cost of building or upgrading stadiums, enhancing security, and providing transport infrastructure has proven to be a major hurdle—especially for countries facing internal financial pressures.

South Africa previously hosted the tournament in 1995, a landmark event that united the nation and remains etched in sporting history. The nation made an unsuccessful bid for the 2023 World Cup, which was ultimately awarded to France.

Despite stepping back from hosting duties, SARU emphasized that South Africa will continue to play a leadership role in the global rugby community and will support efforts to make the sport more accessible and inclusive worldwide.

Olympic Champion Ahmed Hafnaoui Handed 21-Month Ban Over Whereabouts Failures

Tunisian Olympic swimming champion Ahmed Hafnaoui has been suspended from competition for 21 months after failing to comply with anti-doping whereabouts requirements on three separate occasions within a 12-month period.

The Aquatic Sports Integrity Unit (ASIU), the body responsible for anti-doping efforts in international swimming, announced on Thursday that Hafnaoui’s ban would be effective immediately and retroactive to April 11, 2024. All competitive results achieved by the swimmer since that date have been annulled.

Hafnaoui, 22, rose to international prominence at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he claimed a surprise gold medal in the men’s 400-meter freestyle. His victory, from lane eight, made headlines around the world and positioned him as one of Africa’s brightest swimming prospects.

According to ASIU, Hafnaoui was found to have missed three mandatory whereabouts checks—reporting failures that are treated as anti-doping rule violations under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations. Athletes in the registered testing pool are required to provide regular updates on their location to facilitate out-of-competition testing.

While no banned substances were found in his system, the missed tests alone are enough to warrant a sanction under the existing framework.

The suspension means Hafnaoui will be ineligible to compete at any international or national events until January 10, 2026, ruling him out of the 2025 World Aquatics Championships and casting doubt over his preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Neither Hafnaoui nor his representatives have publicly responded to the ruling, and it remains unclear whether he intends to appeal the decision.

The Tunisian Swimming Federation has yet to issue an official statement, but the news comes as a significant blow to the country's sporting hopes, with Hafnaoui previously seen as a leading medal contender for future international meets.

The ASIU emphasized the importance of whereabouts compliance in ensuring the integrity of the sport and reaffirmed its commitment to holding all athletes to the same standards.

Fofana’s contributions highlighted his attacking instincts and resilience, making him a player to watch in future European fixtures.

In the UEFA Conference League, Moroccan striker Ayoub El Kaabi continued his stellar form by scoring twice in Olympiacos’ 2-0 win over Aston Villa. The Greek side advanced 6-2 on aggregate, booking their place in a European final for the first time in club history.

El Kaabi’s brace not only secured the victory but also elevated him as one of the most impactful players in the tournament. Olympiacos will now face Italian side Fiorentina in the final, with El Kaabi expected to lead the line.

These performances are a testament to the immense talent coming from Africa and their influence across Europe’s top football competitions. As clubs increasingly scout the continent for the next generation of stars, this quarter-final round reaffirms Africa’s place at the heart of world football.

In front of a passionate home crowd at Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca, Morocco held their nerve to overcome Cรดte d’Ivoire 4-3 on penalties following a tense 0-0 draw in regulation time.

The match was a showcase of tactical discipline and missed opportunities, with both sides creating chances but lacking the clinical finishing required to break the deadlock. Morocco pushed forward repeatedly, spurred on by the energy of the crowd, while the Ivorians remained compact and dangerous on the counter.

With 90 minutes offering no breakthrough, the contest was decided by penalties. In a dramatic shoot-out, the Atlas Cubs emerged victorious 4-3, thanks to composed finishing and a crucial save from goalkeeper Yassine Lamrabet.

The win sends Morocco into their first U-17 AFCON final since 2013, with the opportunity to lift the trophy on home soil.

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Mali Brush Aside Burkina Faso to Reach Final

๐Ÿ‰ Ade Adebisi Champions African Talent in Rugby League, Eyes Nigerian Women’s Entry into UK Leagues

Ade Adebisi, the trailblazing head of the Nigeria Rugby League Association, has once again underscored the vast and largely untapped reservoir of African talent in rugby league. Speaking over the weekend, Adebisi called on clubs in the Super League and other top-tier competitions to actively scout players from the African continent and diaspora communities in the UK.

Adebisi, a former professional player who has been instrumental in Nigeria’s rugby league development, pointed to the success of initiatives like Salford Red Devils’ ongoing collaboration with Ghana as proof that African talent can thrive on the international stage when given the right opportunities.

“There’s a wealth of talent in Africa—athletic, disciplined, and hungry for opportunity,” Adebisi said. “We need to bridge the gap between local talent and global platforms. The next big star in rugby league could very well come from Lagos, Accra, or Nairobi.”

In a groundbreaking move, Adebisi also revealed plans to bring five Nigerian women players to the UK league system next year. This initiative marks a major step toward not only increasing African representation in the sport but also fostering gender inclusion.

“We’re excited to introduce five of our top female players to the UK leagues in 2026. It’s a significant milestone for Nigerian women in rugby and a signal to the world that Africa is serious about competing at all levels,” he said.

The initiative is expected to involve training camps, exchange programs, and trials with established clubs. It follows on the heels of successful international exposure tours by the Nigerian men’s team, the Green Hawks, who have been gaining recognition in the Middle East-Africa region.

Adebisi’s call aligns with broader efforts to expand rugby league across Africa. The Nigeria Rugby League Association has been active in developing grassroots programs, school competitions, and regional tournaments aimed at nurturing young talent. Several players of Nigerian descent are already making waves in Europe and Australia, further validating the potential of the African pipeline.

Rugby league remains a developing sport across much of the continent, but with advocates like Adebisi at the helm, Africa’s place in the global rugby league ecosystem is quickly taking shape.

As the sport continues to grow in popularity and visibility, Nigeria and its neighbors could soon become fertile ground for the next generation of stars lighting up stadiums across the world.

African Stars Set for 2025 ITTF World Cup Challenge in Macao

The 2025 ITTF Men’s and Women’s World Cup officially gets underway on April 14 at the Galaxy Arena in Macao, China, with eight African athletes set to represent the continent following their qualification through the ITTF Africa Cup earlier this year.

Held in Tunis, Tunisia, from February 25 to 27, the Africa Cup served as the continental qualifying event for the World Cup, with the top four finishers in both the men’s and women’s singles earning automatic tickets to Macao.

Men’s Singles: Assar Leads the Charge

Leading the male contingent is Egypt’s Omar Assar, who secured his record seventh Africa Cup title in a hard-fought 4-3 final against Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna. Assar’s consistency and experience continue to place him at the forefront of African table tennis.

Aruna, one of the continent’s most decorated players, qualified after a commanding 4-0 quarterfinal win over Cรดte d’Ivoire’s Oba Oba Kizito. The Nigerian remains a familiar face at the global event, having made history in 2014 as the first African to reach the World Cup quarterfinals.

Benin’s Abdel-Kader Salifou will make his World Cup debut after eliminating Egypt’s Mohamed El-Beiali 4-1 in the quarterfinals—a result hailed as one of the tournament’s standout performances.

Completing the men’s roster is Ylane Batix of Cameroon, who overcame Madagascar’s Antoine Razafinarivo 4-2 to book his place in Macao.

Women’s Singles: Egyptian Trio Dominates

The Egyptian women once again demonstrated their dominance on the African stage, with Hana Goda, Dina Meshref, and Mariam Alhodaby all qualifying for the World Cup.

Seventeen-year-old Goda captured the Africa Cup crown after defeating Meshref 4-2 in the final, continuing her rise as one of the continent’s brightest young stars. Meshref, a nine-time Africa Cup champion, also ensured her qualification with a comprehensive victory over Nigeria’s Aminat Fashola.

Alhodaby sealed her spot by sweeping Algeria’s Lynda Loghraibi 4-0 in the quarterfinals, adding to Egypt’s commanding presence in the women’s bracket.

Nigeria’s Fatimo Bello rounds out the women’s qualifiers after reaching the semifinals, solidifying her status as one of the top female paddlers in West Africa.
